Our proficient team of sleep science coaches, engineers, and product evaluators rigorously inspect hundreds of mattresses using our unique product methodology. Each article is scrutinized for precision, citing only credible sources. Systematically reviewing our content and recommendations, we align with the latest scientific literature and expert insights. Our top-rated mattresses have been personally evaluated and highly rated.

When testing our mattresses we evaluate several key factors that people take into consideration when choosing between mattresses. First is performance in each sleeping position. We test each mattress in the back, side, and stomach sleeping positions to note how the mattresses perform for different sleeping types. Next, we test response time to note how quickly the mattress responds to movements - this metric is important for those that shift positions throughout the night. Next is Motion Transfer - this test is important for couples. We note how much motion is felt on one side of the mattresses when there's movement on the other. If you're sharing a bed, you want minimal motion transfer so that if your partner moves during the night it doesn't wake you up. We also test edge support to see how sturdy the edge of the mattress is. We note how well supported you are when sitting and laying near the edge of the mattress. And last we test cooling and breathability by noting how cool to the touch the mattress cover is and also how breathable the materials are to ensure you don't sleep hot.

Side sleeping is one of the most common sleeping positions, it helps decrease acid reflux, reduces snoring, and alleviates symptoms of sleep apnea. However, it’s not uncommon for side sleepers to experience pain in their shoulders and hips as a result of pressure build-up around those areas. When you sleep on your side, all of your weight is put onto your hips and shoulders, so it’s crucial to find a mattress that can accommodate this sleep style. To find the best mattress for side sleepers, you should look for a bed that offers an even balance of comfort and support.

In this guide, we’ll discuss what to look for during your search for the best mattress for you as well as our Editors’ recommended mattresses for side sleepers.

The gentle cushioning lets my shoulders and hips sink in just the right amount while keeping my spine aligned. I’ve noticed how the springy coils enhance airflow, making my sleep feel cooler and more refreshing.

For the price, I can’t think of a better mattress that offers this much comfort and durability.

The top comfort layer is made from breathable Vaya Foam, which I’ve noticed feels soft yet supportive, allowing my shoulders and hips to sink in just the right amount for pressure relief.

Beneath that, the pocketed coils provide the support my body needs, ensuring proper spinal alignment without feeling too firm. What I like most is how these coils are individually wrapped, which not only minimizes motion transfer but also enhances airflow to keep me cool at night.

Another thing I appreciate about the Vaya Hybrid is its durable base layer that gives the mattress its sturdy foundation. For someone like me who wants a quality hybrid mattress without overspending, this is a fantastic choice. It’s clear to me that Vaya has focused on delivering premium materials and thoughtful design while keeping the price accessible.

I feel like I’ve discovered an incredible deal every time I lie on this mattress. It provides the kind of comfort and support that I’d expect from something far more expensive.

I trust the Saatva Classic to deliver a perfect balance of cushioning and firmness for side sleepers. Its Euro pillow top feels soft and inviting, gently hugging my shoulders and hips while the coils provide sturdy support underneath.

I appreciate how its dual-coil system offers enhanced responsiveness and airflow, so I never feel overheated or stuck. The lumbar zone support is particularly impressive, keeping my spine aligned and ensuring I wake up without aches.

For anyone who loves the traditional feel of an innerspring mattress with modern comfort upgrades, this one is my go-to.

When I first looked into the Saatva Classic, I was impressed by its dual coil construction, which gives it that perfect mix of durability and responsiveness. The upper layer consists of individually wrapped coils that contour to my body and isolate motion, which is a must for restless sleepers like me.

Beneath that, the steel coil support base provides the sturdy foundation I need to feel completely supported, especially in the lumbar region. I also appreciate the plush Euro pillow top, which adds a luxurious feel while offering just the right amount of cushioning for my shoulders and hips.

Another standout feature of the Saatva Classic, in my opinion, is the lumbar zone support enhancement. It’s designed specifically to promote spinal alignment, and I’ve felt the difference compared to other innerspring mattresses I’ve tried.

The organic cotton cover is a bonus—it’s soft, breathable, and eco-friendly, which is something I value in a mattress.

I’ve noticed the advanced cooling technology keeps me from overheating, which is essential for uninterrupted sleep.

The zoned support system feels like it’s designed to cater specifically to side sleepers, offering softness where I need it and firmness where it counts. It’s a truly premium experience every night.

The Nolah Evolution 15″ feels like it was built for luxury and comfort, starting with its thick Euro-style pillow top. When I first lay on it, I could feel how the cooling foam layer beneath works with the pillow top to cradle my body while keeping me from overheating.

The construction also includes a layer of AirFoamICE™, which provides even more cooling and pressure relief, and I’ve found that it works especially well for my shoulders and hips when I sleep on my side.

Plus, the reinforced edges make the mattress feel larger and prevent that sagging sensation when I sit or lie near the edge. For me, the Nolah Evolution 15″ blends premium materials and thoughtful design into a construction that truly delivers both comfort and cooling.

I feel enveloped by softness every time I lie down on this mattress as if the pillow top is wrapping me in a gentle embrace. It’s incredibly plush, but there’s a solid base underneath that keeps me supported.

Our Take:

I feel the Amerisleep AS6 Black Series is an excellent choice for side sleepers who struggle with overheating. Its ultra-plush layers let my hips and shoulders sink in comfortably while still maintaining alignment in my back.

What impresses me most is how effectively its cooling materials regulate temperature, even during warmer nights. The added support in key areas ensures I wake up refreshed and pain-free.

I can’t think of another mattress that keeps me this cool while delivering such exceptional comfort.

When I first tested the Amerisleep AS6 Black Series, I was amazed at how effectively it keeps me cool all night. The ultra-breathable cover and open-cell Bio-Pur® foam work together to dissipate heat, which I appreciate since I tend to overheat easily.

The top comfort layer is soft and plush, giving me that cloud-like feel, but it’s the cooling properties of the foam that really stand out. Beneath that, the Active Flex layer adds responsiveness, ensuring that I never feel stuck when moving around in bed.

I also noticed that the support core of the AS6 Black Series is designed with cutting-edge materials. The pocketed coils are reinforced to provide excellent edge support and targeted pressure relief, which is a big plus for me as a side sleeper.

The zoned support ensures my hips and shoulders are perfectly aligned, while the advanced cooling technology prevents the mattress from trapping heat like traditional foam models. If you’re like me and prioritize temperature regulation without sacrificing comfort, this mattress offers a thoughtfully constructed solution.

The first thing I notice when I lie down is the cool, refreshing sensation of the mattress surface. It’s like the heat from my body instantly disappears, leaving me feeling calm and comfortable.

Our Take

I trust the Zoma Start to provide everything I need as a side sleeper in a memory foam mattress. Its contouring foam layers relieve pressure on my hips and shoulders while maintaining proper alignment in my back.

I’ve noticed how its responsive surface allows for easy movement, so I never feel stuck during the night. The breathable design keeps me cool and comfortable, even when I tend to overheat.

For anyone who loves the cushioning feel of memory foam with excellent support, this mattress delivers every time.

When I tested the Zoma Start, I could immediately tell it was designed with simplicity and performance in mind. The top layer is crafted with gel-infused memory foam, which hugs my body in all the right places while staying cool.

I’ve found that this layer is perfect for relieving pressure points, especially around my shoulders and hips when I sleep on my side. Beneath it, the Reactiv™ layer adds a touch of responsiveness, preventing that sinking feeling that some memory foam mattresses can have.

What really stands out to me about the Zoma Start is its streamlined yet effective construction. The high-density base foam provides the durability and support I need, ensuring my spine stays aligned throughout the night.

Our Take:

I find the Nest Bedding Sparrow Hybrid to be a premium, customizable mattress that’s perfect for different sleep preferences. With three firmness options—plush, medium, and firm—it caters to all kinds of sleepers.

The Energex™ foam layer provides responsive comfort while relieving pressure, and the pocketed coils offer superb support and motion isolation. The dual firmness option in King and Cal King sizes allows me and my partner to customize our sides for the perfect fit.

Plus, its edge support and long-term durability make it a solid investment.

The Nest Bedding Sparrow is one of the few mattresses I’ve tried that truly caters to couples. Its construction is highly customizable, and I love how I can choose a firmness level that suits me and my partner.

The top layer features Energex™ foam, which feels like a hybrid between memory foam and latex, offering both contouring and responsiveness. It’s perfect for me as a side sleeper because it relieves pressure without making me feel stuck.

Beneath that, the SmartFlow support foam enhances airflow, keeping the mattress cool even when two people are sharing it.

What I find most impressive about the Sparrow is its zoned pocketed coil system. These coils reduce motion transfer, so I hardly notice when my partner shifts during the night.

The coils also provide targeted support, helping both of us maintain proper spinal alignment no matter our sleeping positions.

I also appreciate the durability of the design—it feels solid and built to last. For couples like us who need a balance of support, comfort, and motion isolation, the Sparrow hits all the right notes.

I feel like this mattress was made for sharing because it adapts so well to both my needs and my partner’s. Even when one of us moves, the other barely notices, which means uninterrupted sleep for both of us.

The surface feels spacious, with plenty of room to stretch out without feeling crowded. It’s supportive enough to keep us both comfortable, no matter how different our sleep styles are.

I love how the mattress balances softness and firmness, so we’re both happy with it. It feels like a compromise that doesn’t actually compromise anything. There’s a sense of stability and comfort that works perfectly for two people.

It’s like having our own personalized sleep zones in one bed. Each night feels like a peaceful, shared experience, and we wake up feeling well-rested together.

Pros:

  • Designed to minimize motion transfer, perfect for couples.
  • Customizable firmness options to suit different sleep preferences.
  • Spacious and supportive for undisturbed, shared comfort.

Cons:

  • Customization options may make the selection process more complex.

Mattress Types for Side Sleepers

For the most part, memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses are all great for side sleepers— which leaves plenty of options.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses are great for side sleepers because they have to cushion characteristics to prevent pressure points. Memory foam got its name because it “remembers” your shape and adapts to your body. Memory foam takes the pressure off your body which helps eliminate tossing and turning.

When shopping for a memory foam mattress for side sleepers, we recommend you stick with medium to medium-soft firmness. If you go too soft, your hips will sink so much and cause lower back pain. But if you go too firm, you’ll free aches and pains on your shoulders and hips.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses are excellent for side sleepers who want more bounce from their bed than an all-foam counterpart can provide. Hybrids combine the best of both worlds— with cushioning top layers and a pocketed coil system, these beds are great at offering an even balance of comfort and support. Most hybrids contain a pocketed coil system to offer zoned support and prevent motion transfer, too. Meaning, you can have a bouncy bed without worrying about disturbing a sleeping partner every time you toss or turn.

Latex Mattresses

Latex mattresses are very responsive. Imagine a latex glove. If you pull it tight, the latex glove adapts to your hand and the moment you let the glove go it snaps back into its original shape. This natural characteristic of latex makes it a great option for mattresses. You want a mattress to bend with you and you also want it to snap back and support you.

However, if you are looking for a latex mattress there are a few important things to consider. First, latex mattresses are generally the most expensive mattress type on the market. When looking at a latex bed make sure it’s 100% latex and not a synthetic latex blend. Second, make sure it isn’t too firm. This is especially true for side sleepers who need more cushion from their mattress.

Innerspring Mattresses

The only type of mattress to be wary of as a side sleeper is innerspring because not all innersprings are built to offer conformity. The most important thing for side sleepers looking to avoid pain is finding a bed that will cushion the shoulders and hips. Unfortunately, not all innerspring mattresses do that. When you lay on an innerspring, it doesn’t mold or cushion your body like memory foam or even latex would. Instead, you’re left adapting to the bed, and not the other way around. If your body doesn’t conform to the mattress, it leaves opportunity for pressure points to form and can lead to increased hip and shoulder pain— which is exactly what most side sleepers are trying to avoid.

If you are mostly interested in a coil mattress, we recommend a medium-soft mattress with individually wrapped coils and a pillow top to provide extra cushion.

What Should Side Sleepers Look for in a New Mattress?

There are a variety of things to consider before settling on a new mattress. For starters, your personal preferences for mattress type and firmness play a significant role. Beyond that, side sleepers should look for a bed that offers pressure relief, zoned support, and is around a soft to medium firmness.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is by far one of the most important things for sleepers who are looking to relieve chronic pains. When you wake up in the morning with a stiff back and sore joints, it’s likely a result of sleeping on a mattress that isn’t providing you with the best support.

When you sleep, it’s your body’s time to recover and prepare itself for the next day. During sleep, your vertebrae have a chance to rehydrate and your back muscles can rest. It’s important your mattress is conducive to recovery— if not, chronic pain can be the result.

Memory foam is regarded as the best material for pressure relief. Developed by NASA in the 1970s, this material was designed for astronauts to alleviate stress during take-off.

Zoned Support

With side sleepers, a good supportive layer must back up the softer comfort layer. This design keeps curves of the spine and neck naturally aligned.

Having a supportive mattress is not the same thing as having a mattress of hard firmness. Well-built softer mattresses provide both conformity and support.

Side sleepers can benefit from zoned support, specifically. Zoned support can be achieved with the inclusion of a pocketed coil system, or it can be created using a layer of foam or alternative support technology. The goal behind zoned support is to cushion pressure points and support the spine.

For example, in many zoned support technologies, they feel firmer and offer better support underneath your torso, neck, and feet— this contributes to neutral spinal alignment. On the other hand, these technologies feel softer and offer more cushioning under your shoulders and hips to prevent aches and pains.

Firmness Levels

The best mattress for side sleepers allows the parts of the body that stick out to comfortably sink in— this allows the neck and spine to be supported on top of the mattress in alignment.

Soft to medium memory foam mattresses do an exceptional job of contouring to the curves and protruding parts of the side sleeping body. Firm and medium-firm mattresses are typically too firm to allow your hips and sides to sink in enough, so it’s usually best to avoid those.

A mattress that contours to your natural curves when you lay on your side prevents, or at least limits, pain caused by pressure points.

The exact firmness of the mattress depends on your personal preference, size, weight and body type. Ideally, look for a mattress somewhere in the range of 3-6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, with the higher numbers being firmer. This should achieve a good balance between support and conformity. More petite people may prefer softer, while heavier people likely need thicker and slightly firmer beds for long-term comfort.

Saving on a Mattress for Side Sleepers

Mattresses for side sleeping can cost a significant amount, due to the fact that they require thick cushioning layers to ease pressure points. Side sleepers can watch for mattress sales and deals that occur throughout the year:

Tips for Alleviating Back Pain for Side Sleepers

Due to a prolonged pelvic twist, a side sleeper’s spine may already be misaligned. Sleeping on too firm of a mattress that does not sufficiently absorb pressure points facilitates or worsens lower back and neck pain.

Along with switching to a mattress that complements the side sleeping styles, there are a few other preventative measures that help ease pain and misalignment.

One of the biggest ways to avoid pain? Training yourself to sleep more aligned:

  • When first getting comfortable in bed, ensure that your hips and pelvis remain straight.
  • Your spine and neck ideally should remain in a straight line, parallel to the floor.
  • If needed, make adjustments before falling asleep or if you wake in the night.
  • Try keeping a pillow in front of you to avoid leaning your torso forward.
  • Use a small pillow between your knees, which helps minimize pelvic twisting. The Mayo Clinic recommends side sleepers do this to prevent back pain.

The pillow you use for your head also proves important. Look for one that supports varying pressures of your head and neck. Overly stiff or tall pillows keep your head too high relative to your spine, creating a new form of pressure. If it is too short, it won’t sufficiently cradle your head and neck. Keeping your neck straight with your spine is the goal.

Conclusion

Side sleepers should ensure that the mattress they choose possesses a thicker, softer comfort layer to conform to and relieve pressure points. As a side sleeper with hip pain, I have run into a problem in finding an optimal mattress due to a problem not mentioned here.
I purchased a rather expensive all latex mattress composed of two 3 inch layers of medium Dunlop latex topped with one 3 inch layer of soft Talalay latex. At first i was very happy with the mattress. However, gradually the problem I have encountered is that with the softness I tend to sink into the mattress to the point that it is difficult to turn over or move around in bed without using my arms to assist movement. The result is that I tend to remain in the same position far longer than normal. Suddenly I will wake up and realize that circulation has been impaired and that I am in pain. This is an issue that was never addressed by any of the salespeople or support staff at the store of purchase, and I am having a difficult time researching anything about it on the internet.
If you have any suggestions or comments, I would greatly appreciate them.

Memory foam seems ideal for me (6’2″ tall 280lbs side sleeper) but one consideration that is also very important is the heat transfer (my spouse complains I am a heatlog) and VOC smells.
Would ive better off with springs?

    She is 5’8″ 190lbs

Please. I need a recommendation for a very petite side sleeper with fiber myalgia, disintegrating spine in the lower back, and neck with rotator cusp in shoulder torn creating hips, legs, shoulder, arm crippling pain. One that is affordable around $1000 price range.

We tried the Lull mattress, which is our first memory foam mattress ever! I have woken up every morning (as a side sleeper) with horrible pain from my shoulders down to my hips. It’s to the point where I can’t take a deep breath!! Am I just NOT a memory foam person? Any suggestions?
